Tile roofs are one of the defining looks of Southern California. Spanish clay tile in San Diego’s North County, concrete tile across the Coachella Valley, S-shaped barrel tile on estates from Carlsbad to La Quinta. They are beautiful, they last for decades, and they have one serious weakness: they were never built to be walked on.
That is a problem the moment you put solar on a tile roof and the panels need cleaning.
Why tile and foot traffic do not mix
Roof tile is rigid and brittle. It is engineered to shed water and survive weather, not to carry the point load of a person’s body weight stepping on a single tile. When a cleaner walks a tile roof to reach a solar array, three things tend to happen:
- Tiles crack on contact. Step on the wrong part of a tile, especially older or sun-baked tile, and it breaks. Sometimes it shatters visibly. More often it develops a hairline crack.
- Hairline cracks hide. A cracked tile usually looks fine from the ground. Water finds the crack, works under the tile, and reaches the underlayment. The leak can run for years before it shows up as a ceiling stain, mold, or rotted decking.
- Tiles shift and dislodge. Even without cracking, foot traffic knocks tiles out of alignment and breaks the weather seal between them.
Some cracks are not visible from the ground, and repairs can be more involved when the original tile is discontinued or the underlayment also needs attention. This is one reason some owners prefer a cleaning method that limits roof foot traffic.

Coastal salt mist and inland dust both soil panels quickly, so these roofs need recurring cleaning, which means recurring exposure to the broken-tile risk if a crew is walking them.
In the Coachella Valley, concrete and barrel tile sit on estates and HOA communities from Palm Springs to La Quinta, where windborne silica coats panel glass within weeks of any clean. The cleaning cadence is high, and so is the cost of a cracked tile on a custom desert home.
In both regions, the math is the same: the more often a tile roof’s panels need cleaning, the more valuable a method that never touches the tile becomes.
Flat pricing, no tile surcharge
Because the drone never sets foot on the roof, the roof material and pitch do not change our cost. A single-story composition roof and a two-story Spanish tile roof are cleaned the same way, so there is no “hard access” surcharge for tile, steep pitch, or height. That is the opposite of crew-based cleaning, where tile and two-story roofs usually carry the highest risk and the highest price.
